Longer Hiatus
Dear BTRB ers,
After
much thought and consideration, By the Red Barn will be on a longer hiatus. We will not be opening for the Spring season.
Thank
you for your support, loyalty and good wishes along the way. It is much appreciated. My mom is feeling better
every day; however, after all she has been through, a glitch has been put into the mix. She was diagnosed with
breast cancer recently. My intention is to be open in the fall. Thank you for your understanding
during this interval. I wanted to share this quote with you: “Loyalty
means NOT that I agree with everything you say or that I beleive you are always right. Loyalty means that I share a
common ideal with you, and regardless of minor differences, we fight for it, Shoulder to shoulder, Confident in one another’s
good faith, trust, constancy and affection.” ~Dr. Karl A. Menninger Best, Candy

March 2011
Dear BTRB ers,
Yes, Spring is almost here. 2011 is moving along. I want to thank you again
for your continued support and patronage. Thanks for your votes for the BOWW
(Best in Western Washington). I am honored to have been included in the fun of that. It has been 15 years of meeting and enjoying wonderful folks from this community and beyond. It is delightful
seeing the children grow, go off to college, marry and have children over the last decade. I’ve taken pleasure
with the “dog visitors.’ I am overjoyed with the laughter
and tears of my friends and patrons. A BIG Gracias to one and all.
Remember the
book “A Tale of Two Cities”? ·
"It
was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch
of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring
of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to
Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its
noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two
Cities, Book 1, Chapter 1 That is basically the story of the last few months for me. My son, Bryce, came home for Christmas; then left
on January 3rd. It was truly
the “best of times.” It was like no time had passed
since he was here last year. I was able to see him almost every single day. I made him breakfast....and enjoyed
it. Who could ask for more? Although he was visiting friends
and enjoying the Northwest, my cup was full, just knowing he was around the corner so to speak. I was so very grateful for the visit. I was still glowing from the time
spent with the Brysterman when’ “It was the worst
of times.” Shortly
after Bryce left, my mom took ill. I spent many nights sleeping on her living room floor on the air mattress.
Eventually, it turned into the hospital, then re-hab.
When she was released from re-hab, I spent almost two weeks living with
her, helping her out; trying to find home help. The
last months have definitely been consumed with the health and well being of mom. Luckily, she is on the mend....at least for today. Mom is 89 years old,
lives on her own, is an independent, humorous spirit. I am back home in my own bed again! (How wonderful is that?) Mid
February, my former husband, Steve, passed away from brain cancer. He was 62 years old. Had we stayed together, it would have been 41 years since our wedding anniversary.
My son, Bryce, has lost his father. I have lost someone that was
in my life for many decades. I am planning
to visit Bryce in Oklahoma when the opportunity is right. So, to make
a long story, shorter, I am not completely sure when I will re-open the shop. The small amount of Christmas stuff that remains, has not been packed up yet.
I’ve spent little to no hours in the shop. I
did go to the Seattle Gift show; ordered new stuff. However, I have not been out to the shop to set up for Spring.
I will notify you when I do plan on opening again
It ALL depends
on the interests and good of Bryce and mom. Thank you for your understanding. I will most certainly keep you
posted on when I re-open.
By the Red Barn Will open again....it
is just a matter of time! You can always check out the website;

The sun will shine again, the flowers will be blooming, there is joy every day, please KEEP HONKING! Fondly,

Well, this was the year that I am truly an empty nester. My son, Bryce, has been away
in the Navy since last October. He has been thriving, maturing and growing through the military experience.
Although I’m prejudice, he did look quite dapper in his uniform during his last Christmas visit. I am looking
forward to even more changes and growth when he comes home during these holidays. He spent 8 to 9 months
in Pensacola. In August, he drove from Pensacola to Maine for SERE training. On his way to Maine,
he stopped to see friends in NYC and Boston. Let’s put it this way: ONE should never drive one’s
car in NYC! He simply could not wait to get out of that town. In Boston, he ate a HUGE Norm burger meal at the site of the Cheer’s
TV show. Then, they served him a very large dessert besides. My theory is that he was eating so much because he may not get many portions
in the woods of Maine during survival training. From Maine, Bryce headed Southwest....to Oklahoma of all places! Can you imagine, in the Navy, and
land locked. He is in the air side of the Navy, thus flying in airplanes and NOT on a ship! He begins more training the
end of October. It will be great to see him again in a couple of months! We just
never quit being moms, do we?
During our fleeting summer, I stuck around my place a good part of the time; doing maintenance,
etc. I power washed the decks and wood structures (huge endeavor)which was very satisfying. The young couple that planted the garden didn’t have much success. Between the
rain, cold weather and the weeds getting ahead of them, it was a sorry garden. I feel bad for them in that they fought mother nature....and
lost this year. That seems to be the story of most of the folks I have spoken to about this year’s harvest. Gosh, I wasn’t getting zucchini
right and left.I grew basil in planters. I made a good amount of pesto. It will be welcome later
this winter! A friend went to Yakima; picked up peaches from our farmer, Ray. Sweet,
juicy peaches. I’ve eaten many; made a batch of freezer jam to boot. I ate and gathered with friends
and family, went to the movies, took in Jazz Alley, Along with free music at the Little Red Bistro
on south Lake Union in Seattle and Sticks and Stones in Renton, Read several
books,Did graduation
parties and out of town visitors. These are among my summer’s fun. I managed to keep walking on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, I improved
that by doing a little jogging.......2 miles was my best. I have found I should stick to walking
though, much easier on the knees and feet! I will finish with this piece sent to me by a good friend:
Warmest thoughts.....hoping to see you soon. Candy

June 2010 Sun in Site!
Well, no more excuses. We’ve had sun (right?)
so yard work can be done! I’ve been digging, raking, spraying and weeding to beat the band.
However,
when I walk around a corner; the cycle begins again.Kinda like housework and doing the dishes: landscaping and yard stuff is NEVER done! The petunias in the window boxes
are standing upright with the warmth and sunlight. So goes the world.
( Side noteJ)It’s pretty obvious I started
this on a sunny day....However....we seem to be in June-uary AGAIN. So,
no yard work today. I’ve been walking and s l o w l y jogging for the last several months. Now,
it is great to be walking in the daylight.Anyone interested in getting up at 6:30AM; joining a group of woman for a morning walk?
Contact me if you’d like to. I finally attained a personal goal and jogged a full mile. (It has been literally
decades) Hurrah! Just when my confidence was beaming, I met two women in the shop on a sunny Saturday. They were beaming, too! Sarah
and Margaret had just finished the Green River Marathon from Auburn to Alki! Can you beleive it? Before my very eyes, I was seeing the euphoric
affect of running. I have read about and heard about the endorphins produced from running. However, I’ve now witnessed
it! WOW. You can see them on the website under Phun
Photos: www.bytheredbarn.com These sisters were blossoming. For Margaret,
this was her 5th marathon of this year. Her goal is a marathon a month. She’s
on the right track!
If you want some other inspiration; I recommend the book: HOW STARBUCKS SAVED
MY LIFE ByMichael Gates Gill (Thank you, Trudi, for recommending it) It is about a guy who has lived with privilege all his life. He learns to live like everybody else to find
that he’s richer than ever!
My son, Bryce, continues to flourish in the
Navy. He is still in Pensacola, Florida. The last I heard, his next training will be at Tinker
Naval/Air Force Base in Oklahoma! When we were texting back and forth, I figured Bryce was pulling my leg. Oklahoma
for gosh sakes. Well, I looked it up on the web and there it was. In the Navy and going to a place
that’s landlocked. Life is funny!
Need a gift? Come on by. “It isn’t
the size of the gift that matters, But the size of the heart that gives it.” Eileen Elias Freeman By the
Red Barn We’re Open, Open, Open.... Just like
The New York Times Weekender OnThursday, Friday and Saturday 11AM to 6 PM!
Did you know? Meaningful conversation beats out small talk! You guys have been coming by for
years; we’ve had great, meaningful talks. (My favorite part of the shop) According to Psychologists at the University of Arizona, Tucson
and Washington University, in St. Louis We are HAPPIER because of it!!!!! Deep conversations,
researchers suggest, May give a sense of meaning in interactions with others! WOO HOO...we knew it all the time
Hope to see you soon. Candy

May 2010
Happy Mother’s Day To You and Yours Last week, I saw a spot on TV about; “The Science of Happiness.” In the piece they said that happiness is about 60%
genetic and 40% our own choosing. Some of the
tips were simple life changes such as:. Get enough sleep. Have fun. Be true to yourself. Make your bed each morning (This one surprised me; however when I don’t make my bed, I don’t
like going to my room at night as well!) Science says; It brings outer order for inner calm. Have
strong relationships. Do several acts of random kindness every
week. Do
a gratitude journal. Forgive (rather than holding a grudge). Write thank you notes! Here’s a chance for self promotion for BTRB! Buy cards! The process helps the giver and receiving written cards helps on the other end!!!! Three cheers for that. So, when you’re with your mom
this weekend: have fun, make her bed, be kind, be grateful, forgive your mom, then, write her a thank you note and everyone
will be HAPPY! (I only wish it were this simple....yet it’s worth a try!) By the RedBarn We’re Open, Open, Open.... Just like The New York Times Weekender On Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11AM to 6 PM! Mom’s Shortbread Am
