June letter 2009
It’s funny how things work out. For about two years or so, my tractor/mower
has been broken. A neighbor has kindly mowed my lawn (I’m sure he is sick and tired of that) for that time until
I could get the part, etc. Well, I purchased the $400.00 part, Brian installed it on Easter. Now, the hydraulic
system on the mower is NOT working. I still can’t mow. So, the grass is above my knees. I’ve
decided to go Ah-Natural! The two times I’ve been to England, I noticed they do this on country estates.
Well, this is no estate, but it is country like. Think of the time saved, diesel saved, and to my surprise, a woman
told me this recently that the goldfinches thrive on the dandelions! (My apologies to the neighbors for that.)
I have borrowed a weed eater from good friends. I’ve cut around the sand box flower garden plus made paths to
the barn and routes I take out there! So, my little orchard has gone back to its roots from years and years ago.
The universe works! By the Red Barn Hours:
Wednesday-Saturday 11AM to 5PM Gifts! It’s What We Do! HoNk, HOnK, HONK! (Keep Honking...I love it!) We will be opened Through Saturday, June 20th! School will be out soon and so will BTRB! Need something for a wedding, a teacher, garden art, “one of a kind” gifts... Please think of us! We
need the business!
I went up to see Bryce on
Mother’s day. We had a change in plans. Originally, we were going out to my brother’s place in Enumclaw.
My Mom had taken a fall a couple of weeks prior. She decided she didn’t want to go anywhere. (I spent the
previous Sunday visiting her) So, I had the opening to go see the Bryster. He had to work until 6PM that day.
I wasn’t going up there until mid afternoon. (I even opened the shop from noon until 3PM! ) At about 2:30
PM, Bryce called. “When are you coming up, Mom?” I explained I was leaving in 20 minutes or so.
He said. “Why don’t you just go to the condo and pick up a bit.” I was surprised but said, OK, I’ll
do some laundry while I’m waiting for you to come from work. It will give me something to do. I wasn’t
a happy camper about that but not a big shock. He said he got sidetracked on his cleaning! Yeah, right!
So, I drive up, no worries. I carried my bags up to his place, unlocked the door. The cat, Cleo, comes running
to greet me! In the entry is a bag with a card with Mom on it! I look around. The place is spotless! I laughed so doggone hard. On the envelope of the card on the back,
it said “Fooled ya...hahaha!” One of the best Mother’s days I can remember. I
recently watched a piece on “Sunday Morning on CBS” that covered the “Children of Recession.”
Basically, 5 kids did movies on how the recession in this country has affected them. What an eye opening piece.
Good news and bad news. On the good side, it has become socially acceptable to admit one doesn’t have the money
to spend on certain items. This to me is a great thing. How many young people (and adults, for that matter) hide
when things are tough; trying to keep up with the Jones when it is impossible. This may open up communication
and discussion about what is really important. One 12 year old girl said she realizes her childhood is not going to
be a fairy tale.Disappointing, yet reality. We are ALL being hit by this recession.
On to a more positive, interesting subject: An Interesting Fact . . . At five minutes and six seconds after 4 a.m. on a Wednesday the 8th of July this year, the time and date will be: 04:05:06 07/08/09 This
will never happen again in our lifetimes (unless you live another one thousand years). Plus here’s
something to think about the rest of your life! (Please keep scrolling!)
Written
By Regina Brett, 90 years old, of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio "To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the
45 lessons life taught me.It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolled
over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2.
When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone...
4.
Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in
touch
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.
8. It's OK to get angry with God. He
can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate,
resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to
let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey
is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.
15. Everything can change
in the blink of an eye. But don't worry; God never blinks.
16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful, or joyful.
18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does
make you stronger.
19.. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and
no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion.
Today is special.
22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old
age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness
but you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none
of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
31. However good or bad a situation
is, it will change.
32. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35.
Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying
young.
37. Your children get only one childhood.
38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile
and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Envy is a waste of time. You already
have all you need.
42. The best is yet to come.
43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show
up.
44. Yield.
45. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.” | |

Happy Mother's Day!
Dear BTRB folks, Yes, according to the calendar, it is MAY. According to my way of dress
and the gas stove running....it feels like fall. Please enjoy the attachment. It is a breathe of spring!
It’s a Humdinger!However...spring will appear again and continue.... Many of us will be celebrating the spring
holiday of Mother’s Day on Sunday. We will honor all those moms who have given us love and protection that we transfer
to our own families. I’ve always said being a mom was the most challenging job
I ever had.....and the most satisfying! My own mom is in her 88th year!
She
is still quick minded, makes her own meals, lives on her own, bakes her own bread, makes biscotti and reads continually! She had an accidental fall lately which has slowed her down
a bit. She is getting stronger every day. I only hope I will take on some of the characteristics of strength and resilience found in mom.
This
past year I have been consciously letting go of my son, Bryce.
(You guys with older kids know the drill) He has been up in Bellingham
going to college. He recently announced that he is joining the Navy. At this time, he is fully independent and
living on his own. He has quit school for the time being. I have every confidence that he will continue with college
while in the Navy or when he gets out. I have faith that he will live a full, wonderful life. So, if you need any last minute gifts for yourself (remember the
wish list in the shop) or your mom, By the Red Barn has plenty to
offer. Our
theme this spring is re-invent and re-use to provide unique, special gift items. We have done that with:Great “one-of-a- kinders”:LikeYard art and bird feeders,
(folks are definitely liking these)fragrance bags to tuck in your pillow for a relaxing sleep,Along
with NEW purse hooks (for you germaholics and practical folks),Lavender cleaner (smells great as you clean),Brownie
cookie mixes for a quick treat, along with cookies by the bag while they last! Please come by. We’d like to help you out with
your gift giving needs.Bring your friends, neighbors and relatives.(We’re off the beaten path...but we’d sure like you to beat your path to BTRB!) As usual, we would like to thank you again for your ongoing loyalty. We hope to continue to earn your allegiance. Signing
off I leave you with a quote sent to me by a friend:From a country song: When your hour glass runs out of sand, you can't turn it over and start again -- Don't Blink!
Life goes by fast! By the
